Pull up the last three emails you sent that contained deliverables. Attached files, status updates, completed work products. Now search your inbox for the thread where that work was presented to someone with a title above yours. Check whose name appears in the presentation, the summary, the forwarded message.

If your name is absent, or if the framing makes it unclear who did the work, you have a visibility problem, and the reason I know you already suspected this is that you have felt the slow erosion for months. Maybe years. The sensation of doing the work, doing it well, and watching someone else become the narrator of your competence while you remain the executor.
The Receipts Ledger takes ten minutes to set up and changes the architecture of your professional visibility over time. It is boring. It is a spreadsheet. It is the single most effective tool I have ever given someone who was being slowly erased from their own work history, and most people resist building it because the act of documenting your contributions feels uncomfortably close to bragging, which is itself a shame response worth examining later, but for now, just build the thing.
Five columns. Open a spreadsheet, a notebook, the back of an envelope. Whatever you will actually use.
Column 1: Date. When the work was completed or delivered. Specificity matters. "March" is useless. "March 14" is evidence.
Column 2: Deliverable. What you produced. Not what the project was about, but what you specifically made, decided, or completed. "Redesigned the intake process" beats "worked on intake improvements."
Column 3: Audience. Who received the work. Your manager, their manager, the client, the board. This column matters because it tracks who should know you did this.
Column 4: Attribution. How the work was presented. Was your name attached when it went upstream? Was it framed as a team effort? Was it presented by someone else without mention of your role? Be factual. "Presented by Sarah in leadership meeting, my name not mentioned" is data.
Column 5: Evidence link. The email thread, the shared drive folder, the Slack message, the meeting recording where your authorship is documented. This is the receipts. Without this column, the ledger is a journal. With it, the ledger is a record.
That is the whole system. Five columns. One row per deliverable. Takes ninety seconds per entry if you do it the same day the work ships.
The power of the ledger is not in any single entry. A single row is a data point. Over three months, patterns emerge that your memory alone would blur and soften. You will see which colleagues consistently receive attribution and which do not. You will see whether the invisibility is random or directional. You will see whether certain types of work get credited (the visible, presentation-ready work) while other types disappear (the structural, operational, behind-the-scenes work that makes the visible work possible).
I want to be honest about something that complicates what I just said. Building the ledger can tilt into surveillance if you let it. There is a version of this practice that becomes obsessive, where you track every micro-slight and build a case file against your colleagues, and that version corrodes you faster than the invisibility did. The ledger works when it is a tool for clarity, not ammunition for a grievance. If you catch yourself adding entries with a clenched jaw and a mental list of people who owe you something, set it down for a week. The distinction between documentation and score-keeping is sometimes blurry, and I do not have a clean rule for where one becomes the other. What I have observed is that the ledger feels different when you are using it to see your own patterns versus when you are using it to build a prosecution. You will know the difference in your body before you know it in your mind.
Tonight, open the spreadsheet. Make the five columns. Enter one row: the most recent deliverable you completed. Fill in every column honestly, including Column 4, even if the honest answer in Column 4 makes your stomach tighten.
